Matt Johnson - Visual Effects Supervisor

As one of the UK’s foremost Visual Effects Supervisors, Matt recently finished supervising Cinesite’s work on Disney’s Bedtime Stories (2008). Cinesite’s work on this project involved the creation of a major character animation sequence, complete with 360 degree computer generated environment.

Matt worked closely with Visual Effects Supervisor John Berton to ensure that the comedy of the sequence was always the most important aspect as was essential that the visual effects provided a realistic and interesting backdrop to the central performances and story.

Matt was Visual Effects Supervisor for Cinesite on New Line’s The Golden Compass (2007), the 2008 winner of both the Oscar and BAFTA for visual effects.

Other recent work includes supervising Cinesite’s 800 shots on Disney’s Beverly Hills Chihuahua (2008) and the superhero dog movie, Underdog (2007) as well as Warner Bros.’ production V For Vendetta (2005) for which Cinesite provided all the visual effects.

Matt oversaw several major spectacular sequences for the cult classic science-fiction film Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy (2004-5). One of these was the vast, panoramic Planet Factory Sequence. A huge, digital galaxy was created using a complex combination of foreground models, digital matte paintings and entirely computer generated planet sections, scaffolding and mechanics.

Matt’s expertise has been utilised for several other major visual effects feature film productions, supervising diverse effects across a wide variety of genres, including “historical” epic King Arthur (2004) for Disney/Bruckheimer and Victorian London set comedy Shanghai Knights (2003) for Disney. Cinesite was the sole supplier of visual effects for both of these productions, which required extensive creative use of 3D modelling and animation, complex compositing and digital matte painting.

As one of the youngest ever Emmy award nominees, both for his work on the major NBC epic production Cleopatra (1999) and subsequently on Hallmark’s The Magical Legend of The Leprechauns (1999), Matt quickly made a name for himself in visual effects for the international film and television industries.

Matt’s practical background in compositing, comprehensive knowledge of visual effects and understanding of film techniques (founded in a film school education), make his on set expertise invaluable to Directors. An excellent communicator, he has a proven track record of successfully interpreting Directors’ visions into on screen reality, no matter how spectacular or subtle the effect required.
